After hearing about the transfer of Dhanmondi branch of Vikarunnisa Noon School, the students and parents of the school blocked Mirpur Road of Dhanmondi-7 on Tuesday afternoon causing traffic congestion there with sufferings to commuters.
For end, protesters requested the authorities to set up a permanent campus in Dhanmondi area.
According to the eyewitnesses, around 12 noon, the students and parents of the Dhanmondi branch of the school first formed a human chain in front of the institution. Later they blocked the road in front of Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital. As a result, traffic jams were created on both sides of Mirpur Road.
In this regard, a guardian said, “We came to the streets after learning that the authorities are planning to close this branch and transfer the students to another branch. If this arrangement is made we will be in trouble. Because we have been living in Dhanmondi for a long time.’ However, Kamrun Nahar, Principal of the educational institution, said, “At the moment we have no plans to transfer the branch and we have not given any such notice.”
Dhanmondi police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikram Ali Mia confirmed the matter to the media saying that “We have talked to both students and their guardians in the protest. We are also trying to contact with the authority of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College and working to normalize the situation.
Additional police were also deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation,” the OC said.
