A Chattogram court on Monday accepted the charge-sheet against former Chattogram Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter, and six others in the case filed about the killing of Babul’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abdul Halim of Chattogram accepted the charge-sheet.
Former SP Babul Akter filed a no-confidence (naraji) petition against the charge-sheet, said Additional Police Commissioner Quamrul Islam, but the court rejected it.
Other accused in the case are: Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, Shahjahan Mia, Quamrul Islam Shikdar alias Musa and Khairul Islam alias Kalu. Of them, Musa and Kalu are still ‘absconding’ according to police.
But Musa’s wife has long maintained that he was picked up by police within weeks of the murder incident. On September 13, the Police Bureau of Investig
ation (PBI) pressed the charges against Babul Akter and six others in a case filed over the killing of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
Abu Zafar Md Omar Faruk, Inspector of PBI and also the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet to the prosecution unit of the Chattogram court.
Mitu was stabbed and shot dead on June 5, 2016, when she was on the way to her son’s school-bus stop at GEC intersection of Chattogram city.
Her husband, the then Police Headquarters’ SP Babul Akhter, filed a murder case with Panclaish Police Station in the port city in this connection.
After staging various dramas including questioning under the custody of Detective Branch, Babul Akhter was relieved of service in August of that year. He is now in the jail.
In January 2020, the Police Bureau of Investigation was assigned to investigate the case.
On May 11of that year, PBI man interrogated Babul in their custody and found his involvement in the case. They submitted a 575-page final report of the case to the court on 12 May of the year.
On the same day, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case with Panchlaish Police Station of the port city accusing eight people, including Babul.
The PBI grilled Babul in remand after showing him arrested in the case.
