DU Correspondent :
A Dhaka court sent 24 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad (BCOP) to jail on Saturday, a day after their arrest in connection with a case lodged with Shahbagh Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam passed the order when police produced them before his court on Saturday.
Earlier, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Nazim Uddin filed a police complaint against the BCOP leaders following Friday’s clash that took place between the BCL leaders of Dhaka University unit and the members of the BCOP.
The arrest has been made based on the complaint,” Nur Mohammad, officer In-charge of Shahbag Police Station, told The New Nation.
Earlier, some BCL activists attacked the members of the BCOP while they were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
To avoid a further untoward incident, police took the BCOP activists into its custody, according to the police official.
Around 15 activists of the BCOP sustained injuries as the BCL activists reportedly swooped on their rally brought out inside the Dhaka University campus on Friday, marking the death anniversary of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad.
Abrar, a second-year student of the electrical and electronic engineering department of BUET died on October 7, 2019, after he was mercilessly beaten up by the university’s Chhatra League members over his Facebook post.
Meanwhile, a number of leaders and activists of the BCOP brought out a procession from Paltan area on Saturday protesting the arrest and staged a sit-in programme in front of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Court.
Meanwhile, several student organisations condemned the BCL attack on the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad.
The student bodies are Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, Socialist Students Front and others.
They also demanded punishment to those who attacked BCOP members and called upon all the student organisations to unite and form a movement against BCL.
