Govt for appropriate utilization of marine resources

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Tuesday said the government wants to utilize marine resources appropriately for country’s financial development. “After the settlement of maritime boundary dispute with India and Myanmar, government is now eager to utilize our marine resources,” the minister said.
Nahid urged the higher education institutes to build skilled human resources, capable enough to extract country’s marine resources including exploration of oil and gas in the deep sea and to protect them.
The minister came up with the observations while addressing a seminar at East West University in the city. The seminar titled “Exclusive Economic Zone: Impact on Bangladesh Economy” was also addressed by chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni, former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, vice-chancellor of East West University Professor Ahmed Shafi, among others. “Our marine resources are not being utilized properly due to lack of skilled human resources. We are still dependent on the foreigners for carrying out survey in deep sea and exploration,” Nahid added.
Lauding the wisdom and farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Dr Dipu Moni said, “It is only for her strong leadership that we have been able to establish our rights in the ocean.
