Bangladesh Women qualify for ICC World Cup 2022

Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team for the first time have qualified for ICC Women’s World Cup Cricket. Bangladesh Women will play in the ICC World Cup 2022 in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3. The other teams, which will play in the main phase of World Cup, are: Australia, England, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, West Indies and Pakistan.
The International Cricket Council [ICC] on Saturday called off the ongoing World Cup Qualifier 2021 in Harare due to the introduction of travel restrictions from a number of African countries, including the host country Zimbabwe, following the breakout of a new Covid-19 variant in southern Africa.
Bangladesh made an auspicious start in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers beating Pakistan by three wickets in their first match. Then, Bangladesh thrashed United States of America (USA) by 270 runs in their second match. Sharmin Akhter of Bangladesh scored a century against USA in that match. She made 130. It is for the first time that a Bangladeshi woman scored a ton in a One Day International (ODI) match. Bangladesh lost to Thailand by 16 runs , according to the Duckworth/ Lewis Method. But as Bangladesh was the top team of the group, Bangladesh have qualified in the Finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup. Pakistan also have take place in the final phase, according to their ICC Ranking. West Indies have also qualified in the main phase of the ICC Women’s World Cup.
ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said, “We are incredibly disappointed to have to cancel the remainder of this event but with travel restrictions from a number of African countries being imposed at such short notice there was a serious risk that teams would be unable to return home.
“We have explored a number of options to allow us to complete the event but it isn’t feasible and we will fly the teams out of Zimbabwe as soon as possible. Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies will now qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 by virtue of their rankings.”
