Dhaka North City Corporation has drafted a plan to construct a visually pleasing park like Hatirjheel under a new project in Kalyanpur area in the capital.
The name of the proposed plan is Kallyanpur Retention Pond project. Itt will use canals of the area evacuated from grabbers.
Sources said, the project plan is being painted as an ecological breathing space in the messy capital city. Meanwhile, its main intention is to cope with the city’s water logging crisis. The project is to be implemented in a vast 182 acres of land with a budget of Tk1,500 crore.
The main object of the project is to reduce waterlogging through activating drainage systems and reservoir in Kallyanpur, Mohammadpur, Darus Salam, Gabtoli and adjacent areas of Mirpur in the city.
Architect and Urban Planner Iqbal Habib, the Consultant of the project, told The New Nation on Thursday, “We have learnt from the Dhanmondi lake project that not even an inch will be neglected for making the active part of the park. If we leave even in inch, it would be grabbed, so we have to use all.”
He said, the retention pond, will be renovated in such way that it would be able to keep water for eight to 10 hours even in rainy season.
Besides, two water pumps will remain standby so that access water can be diverted to the river Buriganga, Iqbal Habib added.
Sources said, the retention pond will have 11 zones which will have a lakeside park consisting of walkways and footbridges, recreation places for children and elderly people, food courts, biological restoration, civic center and residential facility and rehabilitation project for the evicted.
Water treatment plants is also to be implemented to clean lake water during winter.
A ferry services will also run in the project, sources said. The project would not be run by the government, but it would be managed the DNCC. The DNCC will use green bond for funding the project.
The project will use solar aquatic technology system to treat the canals water.
Officials involved in the project said they are finalizing the project map now. It will be submitted to the Prime Minister by November this year. The construction work of the project would be started by 2022.
