The Supreme Court on Sunday extended till September 2 its earlier order that suspended the enrolment of Barrister Muhammad Ashraful Islam as a lawyer on charge of demanding resignation of the Chief Justice through a Face-book post on July 14.
It means that Ashraful cannot practise law at the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the SC till September 2.
The apex court at the same time adjourned till
September 2 the hearing on the contempt of court notice issued upon Ashraful.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Muhammad Imman Ali passed the order after Attorney General AM Amin Uddin sought time from the bench for submitting some documents before it in connection with the case.
Ashraful’s lawyers Sheikh Awsafur Rahman and Syed Mamun Mahbub also sought time for preparation.
Earlier in the morning, Ashraful appeared before the Appellate Division in compliance with its July 15 summons order to explain his conduct. He has already submitted a written statement on his conduct.
On July 15, the apex court suspended the enrolment of Ashraful and directed him not to practise law before the Appellate and High Court Divisions till further order.
The court also directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to remove the derogatory face-book post of lawyer Ashraful and to close all his face-book accounts.
Ashraful earlier told the reporters that he posted a status from his face-book account on July 14, seeking resignation of Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain as he did not take necessary steps to give the opportunity to lawyers to move cases virtually before the court during lockdown and therefore, their families were facing financial crisis.
