SC rejects Abbas plea

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition placed by BNP leader Miza Abbas seeking cancellation of a corruption case against him filed on charge of irregularities in allotting plots in Tejgaon industrial area.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain delivered the verdict.
Now there is no bar to proceed the case in the trial court following the apex court verdict, said Khurshid Alam Khan who appeared in the court on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The lawyer also said the case is at the testimony stage.According to the case details, in 2006, when Mirza Abbas was the Public Works Minister, he allotted 19.44 kathas of land in Tejgaon industrial area to an organization named Pacific Chemicals.
The ACC alleged that the plot was allotted through irregularities in collusion with former BNP MP Ali Asgar Lobi and a government official named Mahfuzul Islam.
The then Deputy Director of the ACC Syed Iqbal Hossain filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on July 15, 2007 on the allegation. Charges were framed in the case on February 11, 2012.
Mirza Abbas filed a petition with the High Court seeking quash of the case when the case came at the testimony state. After hearing the HC issued ruling over cancellation of the case.
The HC on March 30 in 2016 rejected the ruling and then the BNP leader filed appeal petition with the Appellate Division.
