Staff Reporter :
Garment Workers Trade Union Centre has announced demonstration programme in the capital for Saturday in protest against the continued retrenchment of workers and harassment of them by implicating them in false cases.
.The demonstration programme was announced through a press release signed by Garment Workers’Trade Union Centre general secretary Jolly Talukder on Friday.
It was alleged in the press release that garment owners have started retrenching the workers in inhuman and painful ways capitalising the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Jolly Talukder also said the garment manufacturers and exporters are trying to convince the gvernment not

to apply the labour laws as they have got involved in depriving the workers from all their legal dues. Besides, harassment of workers is going on by implicating them in false cases.
In such a sitaution, the Garment Workers’Trade Union Centre will hold a demonstration in front of the National Press Club premises at about 11:30am on Saturday.
Earlier on Thursday, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Rubana Huq announced that retrenchment of workers at the country’s ready-made apparel sector will start from the current month of June as the demand of readymade garments among consumers has declined worldwide due to coronavirus pandemic.
The BGMEA president’s announcement led to strong criticism among all sections of the society despite the government’s incentives to the readymade garment sector.
