Lies have created crisis for govt itself: Cannot be sure to regulate inflammatory chemicals
The textile chemicals market is increasing keeping similarity with the increasing trend of garments export. It is forecasted that the textile chemicals market is likely to grow to $1.38 billion by 2024 from $864 million in the previous year registering an around 8 percent annual growth rate. When export duty exemptions, favourable policies and availability of labour at lower wages are attracting investors in one hand and at the same time catalysing the demand for textile chemicals on the other. The more the garment manufacturers purchase the local fabrics, the more chemicals are sold for washing and dyeing purposes. Side by side, the rise of the denim industry has further increased the growth in chemical consumption. The denim fabrics require more chemicals for washing and dyeing in comparison to other fabrics.
Though it is mandatory to set up ETPs in textile units for the protection of the ecosystem and maintain environmental balance, the fact is that in many industries the facility is not available. Meanwhile, textile chemical sales in local markets have been increasing by nearly 25 percent year-on-year keeping adjustment with other supportive matters. As it is not wise to stop the demand side, so we should have to ensure that suppliers have legitimate warehouses located outside of the city where population densities are statistically insignificant. If it is done, there will be a reduced probability of fatal accidents. Capital city Dhaka is a high risk zone because it is the largest demand-generating region for textile chemicals. The import volume of chemicals is almost doubling every 6-7 years. These dangerous types of chemicals must not be allowed to be stored in densely populated old Dhaka.
We must say the authorities concerned should create pressure so that the chemical traders cannot continue their ages-old practice of storing inflammables inside the capital city.
