ISIS claim under scrutiny: DMP
Staff Reporter :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah on Tuesday said that the cocktails exploded in the city’s Gulistan were not normal, those were very strong.
He said that the ISIS (Islamic State Iraq-Syria) claim of attack on three police personnel would be scrutinized.
The DMP chief said this while visiting the injured members of police at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in the morning.
He said, “The improvised bomb that went off in Gulistan was unlike the one we usually see. Our bomb disposal and counter terrorism officers have already inspected the scene of the blast. We have logged the nature of the survivors’ injuries. Necessary evidence has been collected as well. We are in the process of fully analyzing them.”
When asked about foreign militant groups’ involvement in the blast, Asaduzzaman Mia said, “The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit experts are looking into the matter.”
We do not know if Islamic State indeed has any involvement. We are investigating foreign militant links. It is possible that other nefarious parties are involved and they are making an issue out of this.
The DMP commissioner mentioned the persons having link with the attack will be tried.
“I know about the matter. It is being investigated whether the attack was carried out by the IS or not. Investigation is being carried out by keeping everything under consideration,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Shibli Noman, when asked about the matter.
SITE Intelligence had previously informed about IS’s claim of bearing responsibility of the 2016 terrorist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan.
The police have filed a case against some unidentified persons in the Gulistan attack, said Noman.
Paltan Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Obaidur Rahman on Tuesday filed a case under explosive act, he said.
Earlier, three including two traffic police constables were injured after unknown miscreants hurled cocktails at a police patrol team in front of Gulistan subway in the city on Monday evening. The injured are constables Nazrul, 45, Liton, 42, and bystander Ashik, 28.
