500 more opposition men arrested

Arrest still continues across the country. Around 500 more opposition men, including a candidate of Sheaf of Paddy, were arrested in separate special drives across the country in last two days.
In Bagerhat, police arrested at least 99 Jamaat-e-Islam activists from the house of a Jamaat leader, and Sheaf of Paddy candidate for the Bagerhat-4 Constituency
Police claimed that they were planning to cause unrest ahead of the December 30 parliamentary election.
In a media briefing on Tuesday evening, Bagerhat Police Superintendent Pankaj Chandra Rai said, the suspects were detained from near the Asilaha Pilot High School in Morelganj.
The court sent the detainees to jail, he said.
Police also recovered grenades, petrol bombs along with numerous makeshift arms. However, Abdul Alim couldn’t be detained, said the police superintendent.
In Satkhira, Police in special drives arrested at least 86 people accused in different cases from eight upazilas of the district on Tuesday night and Wednesday evening.
Besides, three cases were filed against them at that time.
In Bogra, Police arrested at least 40 BNP leaders and activists in separate special drives conducted at various upazilas of the district.
Motorcade of a grand alliance candidate Shariful Islam Jinna was attacked during election campaign at Vayerpukur area on December 17.
After the attack, a case was filed against BNP men with Shibganj police station. Afterwards, they were arrested.
Mizanur Rahamn, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station and Humayun Kabir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Police Station confirmed the matter to media.
In Feni, at least 12 opposition men and a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former Upazila Chairman Maulana Nur Mohammad were arrested by police on Wednesday.
In Narayanganj, Police detained President of Narayanganj unit Gono Forum for allegedly vandalizing and torching the election camp of Awami League.
Law enforcers, in a special drive, picked up him from his Tanbazar residence in the city on Monday night. He was the Chief of Election Steering Committee of SM Akram, Oikyafront candidate for Narayanganj-5 constituency.
In Dhaka, at least six BNP men were reported to have been detained in the city.
Witnesses said that an election rally of Salah Uddin took confrontational position with another rally of opposing candidate Babla, in front of Shyampur Laal Mosque around 11am. In this situation, Jatiya Oikyafront chief Dr Kamal Hossain on Wednesday expressed his doubt about fair parliamentary election.
“We have doubt about a fair election, but we’ll be there in the election race till the last so that they cannot say we’ve boycotted the election,” he said.
Talking to reporters at his Motijheel chamber, Dr Kamal further said, “Casting vote is our right. Why should we give up our right? We have already mobilised public opinion and will resist along with people any election irregularity.”
