50 hurt in JU BCL clash

Around 50 students were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit, on Tuesday midnight over a trifling issue.
Most of the injured students were residents of Al Beruni Hall. Among them, six students are now undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College and Hospital.
Source said, the clash erupted between Mir Mosharraf Hossain (MMH) and Al Beruni Hall units of BCL when activist Abu Sayeed of MMH Hall allegedly teased a female student of 47th batch of Management Studies Department in Chourangi point of the campus around at 9 pm.
The female student informed it to her friend BCL activist Ashik of Al Beruni Hall who rushed to the spot with his other friends and clubbed Sayeed there.
Following the incident, around at 11pm, over 70 BCL activists from MMH Hall led by BCL Vice-President Azim Hossain Ratan and hall
unit activist Robiul Islam attacked Al Beruni Hall unit BCL activists who were taking position in the Chourongi point of the university, with lethal weapons including sticks, bottles, pipes and rods.
A chase and counter-chase occurred between the BCL activists of two halls for over one hour while two round bullets were also fired during the clash and a motorbike was also torched on the spot, source said.
Abu Sadat Sayem, Vice-President of JU unit BCL and residential student of Al Beruni Hall said, ‘They fired bullets targeting us. As a result 15 to 20 students of our hall were seriously injured and 30 more students also took primary treatment from the medical center’.
He also demanded exemplary punishment to the attackers in this regard.
Meanwhile, students of Al Beruni Hall locked the main entrance of the dean office of Biological Science faculty and took position in front of the faculty building for seeking justice from the university authority around at 8 pm.
Later, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam with Proctorial body and BCL President and Secretary rushed to the spot to calm the agitated students of Al Beruni Hall.
Students withdrew their blockade after being assured by JU VC and BCL leaders.
As question papers were stored in the dean office of Biological Sciences faculty, university authority was compelled to delay the ongoing admission test for 30 minutes to start.
While talking to JU BCL President Jewel Rana said, ‘such incident is very regrettable that two halls have been involved in a clash centering a trifling issue like eve teasing. We will take action against our activists if we get any involvement of them’.
He also ensured that they would help the university authority to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, denying the allegation of attack, BCL activists of MMH hall demanded justice from the university authority alleging that students of Al Beruni Hall torched their motor bike.
When contacted, JU Proctor Sikder Md Zulkarnine said, ‘After being informed about clash, we rushed to the spot at midnight and brought the situation under control’.
Regarding the blockade by students of Al Beruni Hall, he said, ‘We went to calm the agitated students of Al Beruni Hall in the morning in order that they withdrew their blockade from the faculty building. So, the admission tests were delayed to start by half an hour’, he said.
‘We also deployed a large number of law enforcers on the campus to avoid further unwanted situation during the admission test’, he added.
