Dr Shahidullah’s birth anniv today

Today is the 129th birth anniversary of noted educationist and internationally-acclaimed linguist Dr Muhammad Shahidullah.
On the occasion, different socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to commemorate this great man in a befitting manner across the country.
To mark the day, Bangla Academy will organized a seminar at 11 am at
Poet Samsur Rahman seminar hall following placing wreath at the grave of Dr Shahidullah at Dhaka University at 10 am.
Shahidullah was born at Peyara village of Chobbish Pargana, West Bengal, British India, on July 10 1885. His father Mafizuddin Ahmed was a warden of a shrine.
Shahidullah passed Entrance Examination from Howrah Zila School in 1904. He passed the FA exam equivalent to HSC from Presidency College, Kolkata in 1906.
He took Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Sanskrit from City College, Kolkata in 1910, and Master of Arts in 1912 in Comparative Philology from the University of Calcutta.
Shahidullah joined the University of Dhaka as a lecturer of Sanskrit and Bangla in 1921. Later on, he pursued his doctoral studies in France and Germany in 1926 becoming the first Indian Muslim to receive the doctorate degree.
He also studied Vedic Sanskrit, Buddhist Sanskrit, Comparative Philology, Tibetan and ancient Persian at University of Paris, and Khotni, ancient Vedic Sanskrit and Prakrit at Freiburg University in Germany.
