Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of Shirin Akhter, 24, during an attempted robbery in Chittagong.
The 33-years old Ershad Ullah was detained from his residence in Lovelane road on Tuesday, said additional deputy commissioner of police (South) Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf.
“Ershad had an accomplice during the robbery attempt. Police is trying to arrest him as well,” said Rouf, promising details of the incident during a media conference later.
Shirin Akhter got seriously injured by falling off of a rickshaw when muggers snatched her bag in Jamal Khan road on Jun 13.
She was coming from Patiya to her sister’s house in Chittagong’s Battery Goli to do her Eid shopping.
She succumbed to her injuries after six days of battle with death in Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Monday night (Jun 19).
After that incident, members of the Metropolitan Detective Police, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), along with Chawkbazar police station, started thorough investigation to catch the robbers.
Ershad was arrested from his house on Tuesday as sequel to the investigation, a police officer told bdnews24.com.
Lovelane residents say police found a sack filled with vanity bags from the bottom of the bed of Ershad during his arrest. Police also seized Ershad’s motorcycle.
Without disclosing the names, a police official said that Ershad and his associate were involved in robberies for a long time and was arrested once before by police.
The police official also said that they have recovered Shirin Akhters mobile phone during operation.
