ACC Chairman to people

Don’t bow down to corruption

BSS, Dhaka :
Chairman of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood yesterday urged every conscious citizen of the country not to bow down to corruption under any circumstances and build greater unity to resist it.
“It is really hard to reduce corruption without a concerted effort in every sphere of society,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on ‘NGO’s Role in Reducing Corruption’ in the city.
Iqbal said, around 400 persons were arrested last year for their alleged involvement in corruption. Some critics, he said, has however suggested that such arrest has been able to infuse some degree of panic among the corrupt minds but increased the amount of bribe to evade capture.
“Please come to us with specific information and you would see none is spared,” the ACC chairman said adding that the government personnel who still expect extra money after salary increase must be dealt in iron hands.
“It is not impossible to reduce corruption, though it is hard to bring
a full control,” he said. Iqbal said courageous citizens must speak in public domain so that a social resistance is formed against the corrupts. NGOs, he said, has played a very positive role in social sectors in the past and now it could help ACC in arresting corruption in society too through raising awareness on impacts of corruption at the grassroots.
Director General of ACC Mohammad Asadul Islam chaired the function, which was addressed, among others, by former advisor to caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Dr Iftekharuzzaman and NGO personality Khushi Kabir and Aroma Datta.
