Trouble brewing in N'ganj

Ivy again excluded from AL list of favourites

Our Correspondent :
The political scenario in Narayanganj is going to be tense again centering the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls to be held on December 22.
The Narayanganj city unit Awami League (AL) on Tuesday at an extended meeting prepared a list for favourite mayor candidates, excluding the outgoing mayor Selina Hyat Ivy.
“Such a decision could lead to a possible intra-party conflict, heating up Narayanganj’s political situation again. This could also lead to deadly cashes between the supporters of Shamim Osman and Selina Hayat Ivy,” party sources said. Ivy was also excluded from the AL list during the last city corporation polls. But she contested as an independent candidate and won. The party embraced her back into the party although it had earlier announced to oust the rebel candidates.
Narayanganj district AL, at the meeting, proposed three names for the post of mayor. They are Anwar Hossain, Awami League district unit president, Mojibur Rahman, president of Siddhirganj upazila unit of Awami League, and MA Rashid, Bandar upazila unit president of the ruling party. The meeting was held at Narayanganj Circuit House on Tuesday afternoon, presided over by Chandon Shil, Acting President of Narayanganj city unit AL.
“The names of three AL leaders have been proposed as mayor candidates for the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation polls following a direction of AL central committee,” Chandon Shil told The New Nation on Tuesday night.
He said: “We did not include the name of Selina Hayat Ivy in the list, as nobody, present at the meeting proposed her name as a candidate.” Ivy could not be reached for her comments despite several attempts over her cell phone. Her phone was found switched off. The maiden election to the NCC was held on October 30, 2011 when Selina Hayat Ivy won the race, defeating ruling AL-backed candidate Shamim Osman.
Ivy, a popular figure in Narayanganj politics and Vice-President of Narayanganj city unit AL, had already gained confidence of local people as well as the party’s high-ups because of her contribution to development of the city.
The doctor turned politician had been upgraded as Deputy Minister as per a government order.
