A Chittagong court has issued an arrest warrant for Hifazat leader Mufti Izaharul Islam, prime suspect in a Chittagong madrasa bomb blast case.
SM Abdur Rashid of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court gave the order on Thursday.
A hearing on the framing of charges would be held on April 6.
On Oct 7 last year, an explosion had ripped through a second-floor dormitory at the Jamayetul-Ulum-Al Islamia Madrasa, run by Hifazat-e Islam leader Mufti Izahar. He also heads an Islami Oikya Jote faction.
Five students were injured in the blast, three of whom succumbed to their wounds in hospital.
Izahar’s son Harun was in-charge of the dormitory. He had tried to pass off the incident as a ‘laptop-explosion’ but police found handmade bombs, acid, and explosives during a raid on the Madrasa.
Police filed three cases, two of them under the Explosives Act, and another for murder. Mufti Izahar was out on a High Court bail until Mar 25.
He did not surrender to the trial court during the hearing in violation of a High Court order, said Public Prosecutor Kamal Uddin Ahmed.
“The court has issued the arrest warrant after scrapping his bail, as he evaded the trial court even after the submission of the charge-sheet,” Ahmed said.
Defence counsel Abdus Sattar said, they had appealed for Mufti Izahar’s bail and the dropping of his name from the charge-sheet.
