Workshop on welfare of the disabled held in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: A day-long workshop jointly organized by National Forum Working with Disabled (NFOWD) and Welfare Organization for the Rural Disabled (WORD) was held on Monday in the conference room of DC of Faridpur. Funded by Save the Children, the workshop was arranged to create awareness among people for establishing the rights of the disabled people as well as to ensure their security in the society in light of the prevailing law. The workshop was chaired by NFOWD president Saidul Haque while ADC (Gen) Dr. ANM Abdus Sabur was present as the chief guest. Secretary General of NFOWD Mizanur Rahman moderated the workshop. Coordinator of NFOWD Mosharraf Hossain presented the keynote paper. Mosharraf in his paper discussed about various types of disabilities. He said so far around 14,88,000 people with disabilities have been identified while the prevalence rate is 9.7 percent in the country. In Faridpur district around 25,000 disabled people have been identified, he added. In his paper he mentioned about twelve types of disabilities prevailing in the country. They are autism, physical disability, mental illness leading to disabilities, visual disability, speech disability, intellectual disability,hearing disability, deaf-blindness, cerebral palsy, down-syndrome, multiple disability and other disability, reports BSS.
One arrested with heroin in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 in a drive arrested an alleged drug trader with 300 grams of heroin from Terorashia village under Sadar upazila last night. The arrested was identified as M Anarul Islam, 35, of Harishpur of the upazila. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted the drive in the area and arrested Anarul with 300 grams of heroin. A case was filed in this connection.
Mobile court fines hotel owner
A mobile court here fined the owner of Haji Biryani House of Tk. 50,000 for storing food in an unhygienic environment on Monday evening. The mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md. Mizanur Rahman said the mobile court raided the factory of Haji Biryani at Mistiripara in the town and found the materials of Biryani stored in an unhygienic environment. Later, the court fined the owner Mamun Mia of Tk. 50,000 and also declared six months’ imprisonment in default. Before this, the mobile court raided two other restaurants near railway station in the afternoon and fined the owners of the restaurants Anwar Hossain and Shofiqul Islam of Tk. 4,000 each, the sources added.
2,667 tonnes Aman rice procured in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT: So far a total of 2,667 tonnes of Aman rice has been procured from all the five upazilas of the district under the ongoing rice procurement drive of the government against the target of 2,927 tonnes. District food department sources said the Aman rice procurement drive to be continued in the district till March 31. The department has signed agreements with 516 rice mill owners of the district for procuring the rice, said district food controller Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury. Farmers cultivated Aman on 70,723 hectares of land in the district during the last Aman season and produced over 2.5 lakh tonnes rice, the officer added, reports BSS.
15 maunds of jatka seized in Barisal

A joined team of Coast Guard and Fisheries Department in a drive seized 15 maunds of jatka (small hilsa) from a launch in Meghna River at Baushia area under Hijra upazila of the district yesterday morning. District fisheries officer Bimal Chandra Das told BSS that on a tip-off,the joined team raided the launch and seized the banned small hilsa. None was arrested in this connection, he added.
