Christmas observed in Barisal with festive mood

Christmas observed with great enthusiasm and socio-religious flavor with festive mood in Barisal city.More than 20 thousand members of the three major Christian sects of the city amid tight security measures gallantly celebrated their biggest religious and socio-cultural festival from early Friday.The eight-day long festivities started with children fair at churches on Friday and Saturday to ensure the attendances of the special eremonies with singing carols, special church prayers, and discussion meetings .The six Christian Churches of the city, Mother Teresa’s Home, Christian religious training center, Care, Caritas, YMCA, YWCA and other Christian Institutions have arranged different types of programs including visits and special prayers at the graveyards.The churches and adjoining grounds decorated with colorful tiny blinking lights and illuminated Christmas trees placed with a star standing right on top. Besides, Santa Claus handed over Christmas gifts to the children, family gatherings took place and Christmas-Day feasts. To ensure peaceful celebrations of Christmas, security beefed up in the city. The police and the Rapid Action Battalion personnel have been deployed to ensure safety in and around the churches and Christian populated areas. Barisal center of Bangladesh Betar and cable operators of Barisal also aired special programs on the occasion of holy Christmas as ‘Shuva Baro Din’.
View exchange meet on poverty reduction held

A day long view exchange meeting on “Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development” was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Rangpur on Monday. Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) organised the daylong meeting under its challenging the Frontiers Povert Reduction- Targeting the Ultra Poor (CFPR-TUP) Project . Speakers at the views exchange meeting put emphasis on the need for reducing poverty by making extreme poor people of the country self-reliant. It was also disclosed in the meeting that BRAC under its Targeting the ultra poor programme from the year 2002 to 2015 distributed cattle and poultry birds at free of cost among 29,599 extreme poor people in Rangpur district in order to make them self-reliant. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), Rangpur, ATM Mahbub-Ul-Karim presided over the meeting while Deputy Commissioner, Rangpur MD. Rahat Anwar was present as chief guest. Additional Deputy Commissioner (revenue), Rangpur Mostain Billah, Deputy Civil surgeon Dr. Md. Aminul Islam, District Primary Education Officer Md. Khalilur Rahman, District Livestock officer Dr. Mahbubul Alom addressed the meeting among others. BRAC Officer, Rangpur Abu Sayed delivered the welcome speech while BRAC Officer Minhazul Islam coordinated the meeting.
2 held with 2.4kg gold in Chuadanga border
CHUADANGA: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested two alleged smugglers along with 2.4kg gold from Nastipur border village of Damurhuda upazila on Monday morning. The arrestees were identified as Anisur Rahman, 45, son of Shamsul Haque, and Kawser Ali, son of Emdadul Haque of the village. Major Anwar Jahid, additional commander of Chuadanga BGB battalion-6, said on secret information, a team of the border guards took position on Nastipur-Baradi road at the village in the morning. The BGB members intercepted the two men while they were crossing the road riding a motorcycle. After searching their body, the BGB men recovered the gold, reports UNB.
