Two commit suicide in Manikganj
MANIKGANJ: Two including a housewife committed suicide by hanging themselves at Kasba Hajinagar village under Sadar upazila last night. The deceased were Delwar Hossain, 27, son of Chunnu Miah and Sweety Begum, 20, wife of Saudi expatriate Nazrul and resident of the same area. Locals said following an extra marital relation Delwar entered the house of Sweety last night. Sensing the presence of Delwar local people encircled the house. Being panicked both of them committed suicide by hanging themselves. Police recovered the bodies this morning and sent to Sadar hospital morgue. Sub Inspector of Sadar Thana Farid Hossain confirmed the incident, reports BSS.
One held with illegal tablets in Meherpur
MEHERPUR: Police in a drive arrested a man along with 30,000 pieces of illegal tablet from a house of Bagoan village in Mujibnagar upazila yesterday. The arrestee was identified as Ahsan Mollik, 37, of the village. Being informed, a team of police conducted the drive around 8 am and arrested Ahsan along with the tablets, said Kazi Abdus Salek, officer-in charge of Mujibnagar thana, reports BSS.
School girl ‘commits suicide’ in Sylhet
SYLHET: A school girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with the ceiling of a room at Monirgati village in Chatok upazila on Monday. The deceased was identified as Shammi Begum, 14, a class VIII student of Monirgati High School and daughter of Zamshed Hasan of the village. Family members of the deceased said she hanged herself by using her scarf with the ceiling of her room at noon after returning from her school on Monday. Chairman of South Khurma Union Parishad Abdul Mobassir confirmed the incident, reports UNB.
Man jailed for one month over rape attempt
SAVAR: A mobile court here on Monday convicted a businessman and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment for trying to rape a government official at Joyenbari area of the upazila in the outskirts of the city. The convict was identified as Aminul Islam, 35, a small businessman of the area. According to prosecution, Aminul and the victim used to live in separate rented rooms of a house in the area. On Monday noon, Aminul tried to violate her while she was going to take a bath. But the victim managed to flee away from Aminul in the end. Following the incident, police arrested Aminul from the house and produced him before the mobile court of Executive Magistrate Md Jobayer on Monday. After hearing the compliant of the victim, the court sentenced the offender to one month’s imprisonment, reports UNB.
Fortnight long tree fair begins in Faridpur
Faridpur: A fortnight long tree fair began in Faridpur yesterday. The fair jointly organized by District Administration, District Agriculture Extension Department and District Social Forestry Department was inaugurated Monday at Brahma Samaj Road in the town. DC of Faridpur Sardar Sharafat Ali was the chief guest in the inaugural function whith ADC (Gen) Md. Abdur Rashid was in the chair. Sadar Upazilla Chairman Khondoker Mohtesham Hossain Babor, Additional Police Super AZM Mostafizur Rahman, Divisional Forest officer Md. Jahidul Haque, DD of Agriculture Extension department GM Abdur Rouf and Awami League leaders Akkas Hossain and KM Selim were present as special guests. Inaugurating the fair DC Sardar Sharafat said that afforestation could help degradation of environment and biodiversity making the country a safe habitat for all. He also said that massive plantation can help reducing carbon emission at a substantial level.
BADC procures 3,261 tonnes Boro seed in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR: Contract Growers Office, a component of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has procured 3,261 tonnes of borro seed this year. Office sources said five varieties of boro seed were procured from June to August this year. The varieties are-BRRI-28, BRRI-29, BR-26, BR-14 and Nerica Kudrat. The variety seed procurement is as follows: 1,199 tonnes BRRI-28, 1,796 tones BRRI-29, 86 tonnes BR-26, 164 tonnes BR-14 and 12 tonnes Nerica Kudrat. The office said a total of 3,261 acres of land were brought under boro cultivation in 288 schemes to procure the target. Deputy Director BADC Khogengra Chandra Roy said, we purchased the seeds from our 1,154 registered farmers. The price of per kilogram seed of BRRI-28 and BR- 26 Taka 31 and the rest varieties Taka 30.50, reports BSS.
Pedestrian crushed under truck in Rajbari
RAJBARI: A pedestrian was killed as he was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck at Signboard area on Daulatdia-Khulna highway in Goalundo upazila on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Sadek Mondal, 50, son of Alam Mondal, hailing from Darpanarayanpur village in Sadar upazila. Sergeant of Aladipur Highway Police camp Nazimuddin said a speeding truck hit Mondal when he was crossing the road at Signboard area, leaving him dead on the spot. A case was filed in this connection, reports UNB.
