18 fugitives held in Sylhet

The Sylhet police in a drive arrested a total of 18 fugitives, accused in separate cases, from different places of the city on Wednesday. The arrestees are accused in a number of cases filed with six police stations of the city. Sources said police teams from those police stations conducted the special drive in their respective areas from midnight till 6:00am, arresting those 18. Later, they were sent to courts
10 shanties gutted in Sylhet
A devastating fire that broke out at a slum in the Karikuna village at Firuj Miah house in Sylhet district tuesday afternoon. However, at least 10 dwellers were injured when they tried to bring out valuables from their houses. The incident took place at Firuj Miah house in Biswnath Upazila. Director (operation) of fire service and civil defence, told that The fire spread across the slum, where most of the over 10 shanties are contiguous and made of inflammable materials such as wood, bamboo and tin. Rofik Ahmed officer-in-charge of Biswnath police station, told that at the time of fire almost all the slum dwellers were out of home. For that reason, there had been no deaths reported. About the reason behind the fire, slum dwellers alleged that some local influential people with the blessing of some land developers might have set fire to the slum. Some others said it might have originated from an electric short circuit.
IAPP divisional workshop held in PSTU

The divisional workshop on Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project (IAPP) held on Tuesday at Patuakhali Science and Technology University. The regional project management committee of IAPP organised the programme at the conference room of the PSTU to review the project activity and advancement. Dr. Md. Shamsuddin, PSTU vice chancellor, inaugurated the workshop presided over by Md. Nasiruzzaman, project director IAPP. Among others Dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman, project manager of Barisal regional IAPP, Dr. Martin S Kumar, fishery expert of World Bank, Khondokar Sirajul Karim, additional director Agriculture Extension Department Barisal office and president of IAPP regional project management committee , Prof. Dr. Md. Robiul Haque, dean nutrition and food science faculty PSTU, addressed the programme .More than one hundred participants from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Agricultural Research Institute, Fishery Research Institute, and Agricultural research Institute, Seed Attestation Agency, Agriculture Extension directorate, Fishery Directorate,Livestock Directorate, teachers and officials of PSTU. The geographical location and geo-morphological conditions of Bangladesh has made the country one of the most vulnerable ones to climate change. Cyclones, tidal surges, tornadoes are now more often and droughts in southern region of the country are common, the speakers said. To enhance the productivity of agriculture (crop, livestock, and fisheries) in selected agro-ecologically constrained and economically depressed areas, they told.
