Sarjis Alam – a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement – has announced that a new student-led political party will be launched through a rally on Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka at 3pm on Friday, under the initiative of the National Citizens Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

He made this announcement on Monday evening during a press conference held at the committee’s central office in Bangla Motor on Monday evening.

Sarjis, also the chief organiser of the National Citizens’ Committee, said, “Sarjis said, “In the new Bangladesh, shaped by the coup, the need of the hour is to establish a strong political party. Over the past seven months since the coup, we’ve faced a long struggle to realise the vision of a new Bangladesh that we dreamed of on August 5.

“We see it as our duty—a trust born from the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs and the blood of our brothers and sisters—to fight for this vision and deliver that Bangladesh to the next generation. We are committed to continuing this battle. We aim to take the oath of our new party in front of the National Parliament, symbolising the aspirations of Bangladesh’s 180 million people.”

Highlighting the role of a parliament, he said, “For too long, this Parliament has served to protect personal, group, and party interests, becoming a breeding ground for tyranny. Our new political party will change this by placing the student population of Bangladesh at the forefront, with the National Parliament as our witness.”

Sarjis emphasised that the new party will prioritise the interests of the people of Bangladesh, over any personal or partisan agendas.

National Citizens Committee Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Spokesperson Samantha Sharmin, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Chief Organiser Abdul Hannan Masud, and other members of the central committee, were present, among others.

Recent discussions have centered on the political party formed by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the leaders who were at the forefront during the July mass uprising will take on key roles in the party.

It has been reported that there were no objections to Nahid Islam’s nomination for the chairperson position from either the National Citizens Committee or the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The only point of disagreement was over the selection of the party’s general secretary, but after negotiations, Akhtar Hossain’s name has largely been agreed upon for the role. He is currently serving as the general secretary of the National Citizens Committee.

Nahid Islam, currently serving as the adviser to the interim government, may soon resign to take on the role of chairperson of the new party. Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah are expected to serve as key organisers and spokespersons for the party.
