Veteran journalist and former editor of The New Nation, Alamgir Mohiuddin, has passed away at the age of 83.

During his long and distinguished career, Mohiuddin served in various national newspapers and national news agency, including the now-defunct Bangladesh Times, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), and Naya Diganta, where he also held the position of editor.

His death has elicited widespread condolences from notable figures, including Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam and The New Nation publisher Saju Hosein, who expressed deep shock and extended sympathy to his family, praying for the eternal peace of his soul.

The National Press Club, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, and the Bangladesh Photo Journalists Association, led by president AKM Mohosin, also expressed sorrow at his passing.

Mohiuddin died at around 1:30 pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, senior reporter Khalid Saifullah told the media. He had fallen ill at home on 30 May and was initially hospitalised.

After showing signs of recovery, he was discharged but readmitted last week following a deterioration in his condition. Doctors reported that he had been suffering from multiple health complications, including urinary problems, breathing difficulties, and fluctuating blood pressure.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held after Maghrib prayers at the Krishi Laboratories Mosque in Monipuri Para, Dhaka, followed by burial at the Rayerbazar Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard.

Born in Natore, Mohiuddin graduated in English from Rajshahi University. He is survived by two daughters, alongside relatives, friends, and admirers.
