A new political party led by the anti-discrimination student movement leaders are expected to be floated officially in the capital today (Februarey 28). We welcome the decision to form the new political party.
Nahid Islam, a former adviser to the caretaker government, is said to be the leader of the student-led youth group party that led the last year’s July-August uprising.
Meanwhile, Nahid Islam has resigned after six and a half months from the interim government.
He was in charge of Ministry of the Information and Broadcasting and the Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
This resignation of Mr. Nahid is not due to a policy dispute with the government, but for the purpose of leading a new political party.
On Tuesday afternoon, he went to the State Guest House Jamuna and submitted his resignation letter to the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
His decision to quit his adversarial post to join politics and take charge of a new party will serve as an example for others to follow.
It is necessary to mention in this context that three student leaders joined the government formed under the leadership of Prof. Muhammad Yunus on August 8 after the student uprising.
The other two are Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan. Question arises if these two advisors directly or indirectly play any role in maintaining relations with the new party, then it will be questioned.
Mentionable that people could not exercise their right to vote in the last three general elections during the Awami League government.
Against this backdrop, the next election should be such that no question or controversy arises.
After the political revolution organized by the student uprising, the desire and expectation of change among the people have intensified. They don’t want to see old politics anymore.
The initiative of the students to form a new political party is a reflection of that desire. There are so many challenges ahead of the new party.
The youth leading the movement said that the old politics had failed to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
It is expected that the new party will be run in harmony with the aspirations of the people.
However, the experience of the old parties and the enthusiasm of the youth are needed to advance the country’s democratic journey.
We hope that the new party will be able to leave a mark of innovation in politics with the novelty of its policies, ideals and programs.
