Now the truth that cannot be concealed before the whole world that the ruling Awami League wins the elections through its deeply entrenched election rigging mechanism denying the people their right to have a government of their own choosing through a free and fair election.
The two preceding elections were also won by using the same mechanism of rigging the election. But then this truth was easily hushed up.
The weakness of the opposition political parties including the largest opposition party BNP is that it compromised with the government in exchange for sharing seats and receiving cash.
We do not judge them for this now because the politics of terror was all pervasive.
The necessary reform in party politics will emerge from the conducive democratic change.
The coming election is going to be a crucial challenge for the people to have the government of their own free choice.
The public mood for change of the present government is too strong to be compromised. In fact, the present movement is a mass upsurge against a totalitarian type of anti-people oppressive government.
Under this government, the politics was an easy way to become millionaires overnight through abuse of power and outright corruption.
The empowerment of the people as opposed to overreaching abuse of police power is no less urgent.
However, in the context of the letters written by the US Assistant Secretary of State urging the three major political parties to sit together for a dialogue aiming to overcome the crisis of free and fair election, we see there is scope for coming to an understanding for the selection of the Chief Adviser of the caretaker government.
The present arrangement of the caretaker government is rather complicated and proved so twice. It will be also good if the judiciary is kept out of political controversies.
We feel the time is opportune and the need is urgent to make the existing non-functional democratic Constitution fully functional.
It is hoped that Awami League will not commit the third major blunder to the detriment of its own glorious democratic legacy.
The concept of free and fair election is not dependent on whimsical personal interpretation of anybody.
But one thing should be clear that our suggestion is fully ours and not intended to guess whatever the idea Mr Donald Lu had in mind in writing the letters.
