The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested around 3,000 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated groups this year for allegedly attempting to disrupt law and order through flash processions in the capital.
The figure was revealed by DMP Media Wing Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman during a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Friday.
Responding to questions about the arrests, Talebur clarified, “This cannot be termed a crackdown. We are detaining those involved in flash processions and unlawful activities. After verifying the allegations, they are sent to jail through court orders.”
According to the DMP, many of the arrested individuals were outsiders who came to Dhaka intending to create panic and assert their presence.
When asked whether participants were being paid to join the processions, the DC said, “No one would come to Dhaka for such activities without financial support for food and accommodation.
We have information that various groups are offering such assistance, and those funding these activities will face legal action.”
Talebur also highlighted security risks during the processions, noting several crude bomb explosions. “Many were caught red-handed with explosives, which were made in a highly dangerous manner to create panic among the public,” he said.
The DMP official cited specific instances of mass arrests, mentioning that 244 people were detained on one day and 131 on another, crediting increased police surveillance for the success.
“As the national election approaches, political activities are naturally intensifying,” Talebur added, assuring the public that “there is no reason to panic.
The DMP has the capacity to prevent any subversive activity.” He emphasized that law enforcement agencies remain on high alert amid concerns that tensions could rise further ahead of the polls.
