The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has instructed its district and Upazila units to stage protest programmes today (Thursday), across the country to press for the July Declaration, July Charter, and justice for the July massacre.
Ahead of the demonstrations, the newly-formed district and upazila coordination committees of the party have been asked to hold their first executive meetings at their respective offices. This directive was issued by NCP Convenor Md Nahid Islam and Member-Secretary Akhtar Hossain.
The instructions were conveyed through a statement sent to the media late Tuesday night by NCP Joint Member-Secretary (Office) Saleh Uddin. According to the NCP statement, the executive meetings at the district and upazila offices will be followed by demonstrations and rallies centred on the party’s three-point demand: recognition of the July Declaration, adoption of the July Charter, and justice for those killed in the July massacre.
Speaking to media, an NCP leader said the party’s registration deadline with the Election Commission is June 22. “To meet the registration criteria, NCP has already formed the required number of district and upazila committees and is in the process of setting up party offices,” the leader noted.
He further explained that while the party’s committees have been established, no public programmes had been organised so far. “To activate and energise these new units ahead of submitting the registration application, the party leadership has called for executive meetings and demonstrations. These events will mainly include rallies and protest marches,” he said.
So far, the NCP has formed coordination committees in 33 districts and 126 upazilas. These temporary committees will later be formalised into convening committees in line with party rules.
