The Election Commission (EC) has decided to register the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Jatiya League as political parties, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed on Tuesday evening at the commission’s Dhaka headquarters.
Out of 143 applications, only NCP and Bangladesh Jatiya League have primarily fulfilled the requirements after field-level investigations of 22 parties. A public notice will now be issued for both parties to invite objections or concerns before final registration.
Akhtar Ahmed noted that 13 other parties remain under review. Three parties—including Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party, Jatiya Janata Party, and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD – Shahjahan Siraj)—are undergoing further scrutiny, nine others are being assessed for the existence and functionality of their district and sub-district offices, and registration of Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party is pending a High Court verdict. Regarding NCP’s election symbol, the EC secretary said the requested symbol is not on the official list. The party will be asked to confirm an alternative symbol before the public notice is issued.
Meanwhile, seven parties—including Forward Party, Bangladesh Reformist Party, and Bangladesh Communist Party (Marxist)—have been denied registration. The EC indicated that notifications for cleared parties may be issued in phases, depending on the completion of ongoing reviews.
