NBR intensifies oversight to boost trade facilitation
Staff Reporter :
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is ramping up its monitoring of trade operations to improve ease of doing business, NBR Chairman and Internal Resources Division Secretary Md Abdur Rahman Khan said on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with customs officials at the Benapole Customs House auditorium, Khan emphasised the need for customs officials to adopt a service-oriented approach to streamline import and export procedures. “We’ve issued directives to ensure quicker clearance of goods and better support for traders,” he said.
Highlighting the urgency of modernising systems, he announced plans to replace the existing Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) with a more efficient alternative to address long-standing technical issues, including frequent server disruptions across customs houses. ASYCUDA currently manages most of the country’s foreign trade procedures.
“We are committed to identifying and resolving the reasons behind clearance delays. Faster processing and trader support will naturally reduce complaints,” Khan added.
In response to business community demands, the NBR chief noted that the government would consider allowing yarn imports through land ports if formally requested by traders.
During his visit, the chairman also inspected the cargo vehicle terminal and immigration checkpoint at Benapole Land Port and pledged to address the challenges impacting cross-border trade. Later, in a meeting with the Benapole C&F Agents Association, he listened to traders’ concerns and assured them of timely and effective solutions.
The NBR’s increased engagement is part of broader efforts to enhance customs efficiency, boost trade competitiveness, and create a more business-friendly environment.
