The Navy and Air Force will be deployed alongside other security forces during the upcoming national elections, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Sylhet divisional administration officials and law enforcement agencies, he said Ansar’s presence at polling stations will be strengthened, while the army will remain on mobile duty. The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) will also support election security.
On police capacity, the adviser noted that 4,000 officers have recently completed training, another batch is currently undergoing training, and a new group will begin at Rajarbagh Police Lines on 7 September.
Referring to the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, he termed the incident “unfortunate” and assured that an investigation is underway.
Addressing unrest at universities, he stressed that teachers should resolve issues through direct dialogue with students.
He also said the government is actively recovering weapons looted after 5 August, with rewards being offered for information. On the stone looting in Sylhet’s Sada Pathor, he noted that the Cabinet Division’s inquiry has been extended, with the Department of Mineral Resources leading the case. “Those responsible will be punished,” he affirmed.
