126th birth anniversary of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was observed at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) through a vibrant two-day programme that concluded on Monday.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the conferring of the prestigious Nazrul Padak 2025. This year, Professor Dr. Rashidun Nabi was honoured for his significant contributions to Nazrul research, while Mohammad Yakub Ali Khan, a distinguished artist, was awarded for his work in Nazrul Sangeet (music). The awards were presented at the university’s “Gahi Samyer Gaan” stage by Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, and Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, Vice-Chancellor of Nazrul University.
Joining the event virtually as the chief guest, Professor Dr. C. R. Abrar, Advisor to the Ministry of Education, noted that “Nazrul’s poetry and music have inspired generations to resist injustice. This celebration is a humble attempt to acknowledge that debt.” He further emphasized the need for national reform in state-building, which he said must be a collective effort, not the sole responsibility of the government.
Stressing the importance of restoring stability in higher education institutions, Dr. Abrar added, “We need joint efforts from students and teachers to bring back a conducive academic atmosphere.”
In his presidential address, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam said, “Nazrul was not only a poet of rebellion but also of love. He dedicated his life to fighting communalism and discrimination. His ideology should guide our way forward.” He asserted that Nazrul’s literary and philosophical contributions will always remain relevant in the country’s socio-cultural context.
Among the special guests at the ceremony were DU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Nazrul University Treasurer Professor Dr. Zainul Abedin Siddiqui, and Syndicate member M. Zakir Hossain Khan. The welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr. Md. Habib-ul-Mawla, member secretary of the Nazrul Padak Sub-Committee.
