Violence erupted across Bangladesh on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people, including 10 in Dhaka, and injuring hundreds more in clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
The unrest, which spread across various regions, reflects the intensity of the nationwide turmoil.
In Dhaka, fierce confrontations between protesters and police left at least 10 individuals dead and over 100 injured.
According to sources at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), more than 100 injured were admitted to the facility since the morning.
The hospital’s police outpost in-charge, Md Bachhu Miah, confirmed that 10 of the injured were declared dead upon arrival. The deceased include Russell, 28; Abdur Rahman, 22; Abul Kalam; Abu Ishak, 52; Saiful Islam Tonmoy, 22; Azmat Miah, 22; Rakib Hossain, 25; and Manik Miah, 27.
In Habiganj, at least six people were killed and over 100 injured during clashes between protesters and police. The violence erupted around midday when demonstrators, marching towards Boro Bazar, were confronted by officers from Baniachong police station.
The ensuing clash saw police deploy tear gas, rubber bullets, and sound grenades to disperse the crowd. The deceased have been identified as Hasan Mia, 12; Ashraful, 17; Nayan, 18; Mojakkir, 40; Tofazzal, 18; and Sadiqur, 30. Habiganj Civil Surgeon Dr Md Nurul Haque confirmed the six deaths, while Delwar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Baniachong police station, reported a chaotic situation with no clear count of casualties or police presence. Deputy Commissioner of Habiganj, Zilufa Sultana, along with the army, visited the affected areas.
In Rajshahi, one person was killed and 35 injured in a confrontation between protesters and Awami League leaders and activists at Talaimari. The clash occurred around 11am as protesters gathered at Talaimari intersection and moved towards Shaheb Bazar. A subsequent chase involving Awami League activists and protesters led to police firing tear gas shells and sound grenades.
Dr Shankar Dey Biswas, Duty Officer at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, reported that 30-45 individuals with bullet injuries were admitted. The deceased was found near Shah Makhdum College.
In Jashore, at least six people died and 20 were injured when unidentified assailants set fire to a hotel owned by local Awami League leader Shaheen Chakladar. The hotel, named Zabeer International, was targeted in the afternoon, adding to the day’s violence.
