BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday stated that the government has assured them preparations are underway to hold national elections by December this year.

Following a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus at his residence, Fakhrul informed reporters that his party would not accept local government elections or any other polls before the national elections.

Fakhrul also criticised the government for failing to prevent recent incidents of vandalism across the country.

“These incidents have occurred in plain sight of law enforcement agencies. Moreover, the ongoing operation, known as ‘Devil Hunt,’ must not lead to the persecution of innocent individuals, as has happened previously,” he said.

A three-member BNP delegation, led by Fakhrul, attended the meeting, which began at 6:05 pm, according to a Facebook post by the BNP Media Cell. The delegation also included BNP Standing Committee members Salahuddin Ahmed and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

On Sunday, BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed mentioned that a BNP delegation would meet the Chief Adviser to raise concerns about recent acts of vandalism across the
country, including one at Dhanmondi 32.

Additionally, on the same day, another BNP delegation, led by Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, met with Chief Election Commissioner AMS Nasir Uddin and other election commissioners at the Election Commission office.

The delegation received updates on the commission’s preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
