Sylhet Bureau :
National Fisheries Week-2025 was celebrated in Sylhet with colorful arrangements. On this occasion, a colorful rally was organized on Monday (August 18) morning by the District Fisheries Office.
The rally started from the Queen Bridge in the city and ended at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office after parading various roads. District Fisheries Office officials, public representatives, political leaders, fishermen and traders participated in it.
After the rally, a seminar was held at the conference room of Deputy Commissioner’s Office.  Additional Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet Debjit Singh was present as the chief guest. Deputy Commissioner Sher Mahbub Murad, Superintendent of Police Mahbubur Rahman and District Fisheries Officer Sima Rani Biswas along with officials from various levels of the administration were the special guests.
The speakers at the seminar said that after the garment industry, the fisheries sector is making an important contribution to the country’s economy. About 20 million people in the country are directly or indirectly associated with fish farming. Many young entrepreneurs have become self-reliant today with the training of the Department of Fisheries. At the same time, fish farming is meeting the needs of the country and also helping to earn foreign exchange. They also said that 7 sanctuaries have been established in Sylhet under various projects.
At that time, the fishermen complained that various water bodies in Sylhet have come under the control of influential people, as a result of which fish production is decreasing. They demanded that government lakes and water bodies be freed from encroachment as soon as possible.
Besides, the speakers mentioned that the fish farmers of Sylhet have been badly affected by the recent floods and said that the government’s incentives were not enough compared to the losses of the farmers. Many farmers have gone into debt due to this. Therefore, the government should provide adequate assistance to the affected farmers.
