National elections likely in Dec or Jan: EC

zur Rahman el Masud on Thursday in a view exchange programme on the occasion of Updating Voters’ List 2025 stated that they want to present a free, fair and impartial election to the nation being freed from the influence of external forces.

He asserted that there was no scope of being influenced in any way. The election would be held within the timeframe announced by the Chief Adviser. A congenial atmosphere would be created so that voters can cast their ballots across the country peacefully.

The EC said: “In fact, we are now working on the national election. We are not thinking about local elections. The Jatiya Sangsad election will be held either at the end of 2025 or at the beginning of 2026.”

He said some 35,000 enumerators have been working on updating the voters’ lists across the country.

The enumerators should be more responsible while collecting data visiting the voters’ houses.

In many cases, wrong information is included in the voters’ lists, causing sufferings to voters.
“We need cooperation of all in this regard.”

However, the Election Commission Reform Committee is still reluctant to finalise the recommendations’ for EC’s reform. Without reform commission final decision, the EC could not start few major works like delimitation of the constituencies, giving political parties registration and many more.

Election experts have expressed their concern on EC’s decision saying that without implementing the reform, it would be impossible to hold free, fair and acceptable to all election and may raise question.

Dr. Md. Morshed Hasan Khan, Professor, Department of Marketing, Dhaka University said as a citizen of Bangladesh we want the reform in every sector as well as election commission also. But it should have real reform not like to help bring back the fascist regime again.

Dr. Khan said there is affluent time on the hand of the Election Commission to organize a free, fair and acceptable election to all after the reform. But it will solely depend on the will of the incumbent election commission as they want to organize the election in this time.

A credible election participated by all is a demand from every citizen and we want to hopeful to the EC as they will organize it, he added.

Dr. Md. Shamsul Alam, Professor, Department of Government & Politics, Jahangirnagar University, said people from the entire nation are eagerly waiting for an election. A free, fair and acceptable election will be positive to lessen various problems which now the interim government is facing.

Dr Alam said without a minimum reform existing electoral system which was completely destroyed by the ousted Awami League government, would be failed to organize a credible election.

Political parties’ make a consensus for reform in few sectors as well as election commission also and that a positive sign to go through a change to make a prosperous future Bangladesh for all, he added.

Professor Alam welcomes the EC’s decision and hopeful to the constitutional body to hold a free, fair and acceptable to all election.
