On March 6, 2025, the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) hosted an Iftar and policy discussion at the Greenview Restaurant in Laksam, marking a crucial step in promoting the party’s vision of a “Second Republic” for Bangladesh. The event attracted a distinguished gathering of political leaders, social activists, and student representatives, all united to deliberate on the future of Bangladesh and the NCP’s blueprint for socio-economic reform.
The program was led by Barrister Mazharul Islam Sohel, Central Member of the Legal Wing of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee and Chief Organizer of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee in Monohorganj upazila. Mr. Aslam Bhuiyan, a renowned social worker and engineer, graced the event as the chief guest, while special guests included Nawab Fazle Rahman Chowdhury Ayaz, a direct descendant of Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani, and prominent businessman Amir Hossen Dulal.
The gathering also featured notable figures from the NCP and affiliated organizations, including Begum Hafsa Jahan, a member of the party’s central convening committee, as well as Fazle Elahi Rubel and S.B. Jewel from the National Citizens’ Committee, Comilla Metropolitan. Among the prominent attendees was Mostafizur Rahman Masud, the founder of the Book Lovers’ Organization and a key figure in the movement for cultural reform.
Youth leadership played a central role in the discussion, articulating the need for comprehensive constitutional reforms and youth-centered political engagement. Mohammad Sakib, Convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Comilla District and a law student at Comilla University, emphasized the urgency of these reforms.
Arifur Rahman, a scholar from Dhaka University and Joint Convenor of the Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Council (Dhaka Metropolitan Unit), called for increased youth participation in shaping the nation’s political future. Johir Raihan Sagar, Convenor of Ganosanghati Andolon in Laksam, voiced strong support for an end to authoritarian governance, underscoring the necessity of systemic change.
Throughout the event, speakers articulated the NCP’s firm commitment to establishing a Second Republic. The proposal calls for a Constituent Assembly Election, the drafting of a new constitution, dismantling oligarchic control, and rebuilding state institutions to foster greater transparency and inclusivity. Additionally, the NCP emphasized the need to advance science and technology, strengthen national defense, overhaul the economy, and ensure the integration of marginalized communities into the national fold.
The event concluded with a heartfelt prayer for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for justice and democracy, followed by Iftar. The attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by the NCP’s bold vision for a transformative political future. The discussion was expertly moderated by Lutful Hasan Rumi, a representative of the National Citizens’ Committee from Monohorganj, who also played a key organizing role in the greater Laksam region.
The evening underscored a collective call for the people of Bangladesh to unite under a progressive, inclusive banner, determined to reclaim the nation’s future through meaningful political and constitutional reform.
