Chittagong Bureau :
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Wednesday expressed his resentment over the declining budgetary allocation in education sector in the past couple of years.
While the world is witnessing increased allocation in education, the country is going a bit reverse as budget in this particular sector is dropping over the years, he said with an air of frustration, adding, it (education) would have been given first priority in this regard. “When I took the charge (of education ministry in 2009) the budget was 14 per cent while it stood 13 in the following year. Currently, the amount has fallen down to 11per cent,” he said.
Nahid was talking to reporters while attending a programme in a Chittagong school. “There is no alternative to keep accelerating the revelation of education, but to raise budgetary allocation in this sector,” he observed, doubting that without proper budget, ‘educational revolution’ will not get a perfect shape.
He, however, termed the availability of textbooks among students in schools across the country on the New Years Day a remarkable achievement.
The number of students has been up by two and a half times in the past four years, he claimed.
“As the number of students is growing every year gradually, it is now a challenge to provide them education through quality teachers in necessary infrastructure,” said the minister.
Fresh textbooks could be given to 4.44 crore students all over the country on the first day next year, he hoped.
BSS adds: “There was no standard and quality of our education in the past. And so we want its improvement upholding the international-standard,” he said. The government has attached priority to education sector as it can free the country from backwardness, he added.
Referring to the Awami League-led government’s achievement in the education sector, he said many foreign countries appreciated Bangladesh’s education system.
