NN Online:

Nahid Islam, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and adviser to the interim government, is set to take charge of a new political party. He is expected to resign from his government position later this week.

Nagorik Committee Spokesperson Samantha Sharmin made this disclosure to a private TV channel on Sunday.

She said, “Adviser Nahid Islam may resign from the government this week to take charge of the new party.”

In an interview, Citizen Committee Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam emphasised that their post-uprising party will not be centered around any individual but will operate democratically. Leadership will be entrusted to those who embody the spirit of the movement.

The name of the new political party, initiated by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Nagorik Committee, is expected to be finalised this week. If the constitution drafting and committee formation are completed on time, the party’s official launch could take place on February 24.

Alongside the political party, an affiliated student organisation may also be announced. Initially, both the party and the student organisation will introduce their convening committees.

Discussions suggest that Nahid Islam is set to take on the role of convener for the new party. The member secretary could be Jatiya Nagorik Committee Convener Nasiruddin Patwary or the committee’s Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain. The new party’s top forum would include Jatiya Nagorik Committee Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam and Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Convener Hasnat Abdullah.
