Adviser for Information and Broadcasting, Nahid Islam, has called upon the United Nations (UN) to assist in conducting a thorough investigation into the human rights violations that occurred during the recent student-people movement in Bangladesh.
Nahid made this appeal during a joint courtesy call with a delegation from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, led by its Asia-Pacific Region Chief, Rory Mungoven.
The meeting, which took place at the Youth and Sports Ministry office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka, on Sunday, was also attended by Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, according to a press release.
Nahid, who also serves as the Adviser for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, emphasised the significance of Bangladesh’s independence, which was achieved through numerous sacrifices with the support of people from all walks of life.
“This uprising has created certain commitments towards the people of the country,” Nahid stated, adding, “We are working to fulfil those promises.”
He further mentioned that the interim government is striving to maintain national unity by upholding the spirit of the mass uprising.
