Information Adviser Mohammad Nahid Islam has hinted that he might resign from his government position to join a new political party if he feels that engaging directly with the people is more important than serving in the administration.

“There are discussions regarding the formation of a new political party. If someone wishes to be a part of it, they cannot do so while holding a government position,” Nahid said during a television interview on Saturday.

He mentioned that the new party is likely to be established this month, and if it happens, everyone will be informed within a few days.

Nahid Islam, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a student of Dhaka University, was sworn in as an adviser to the interim government on August 9, following the collapse of the Hasina government in a mass uprising on August 5.

A student of Dhaka University’s Sociology Department (2016-17 session), Nahid was appointed as an adviser alongside Asif Mahmud during the initial phase of curfew imposed by the Hasina administration in an attempt to suppress the quota reform movement.

Subsequently, members of the Detective Branch (DB) detained Nahid along with other coordinators while he was receiving medical treatment at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhaka.

Later, six coordinators of the movement, including Nahid, were coerced into announcing the withdrawal of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in a video message while in DB custody.

However, upon their release, they reinitiated the movement and eventually put forward a one-point demand for Hasina’s resignation.

The movement soon evolved into a mass uprising, drawing support from people across different sections of society, ultimately compelling Hasina to step down and flee the country.

Nahid Islam was a leader of the student organization ‘Ganatantrik Chhatra Shakti’ and served as the member secretary of its central committee.
