Nachiketa Ghosh was one of India’s most acclaimed music
directors and composers. He mainly composed songs in Bengali, Hindi and Odisha languages. He has taken modern music to a new level, including movie songs.
He was an excellent singer and the gramophone brought out his songs in a single voice. His father Sanat Kumar Ghosh was a prominent doctor of Kolkata. Dr Sanat Kumar is a gold medalist doctor. Nachiketa’s father wanted his eldest son Nachiketa Ghosh to study for doctor profession.
Nachiketa Ghosh graduated from Radha Gobind Kar Medical College (R G Kar College) under Calcutta University. But he was not interested in taking doctor as a profession.
Every Sunday, eminent musicians Krishna Chandra Dey, Subal Das Gupta, Komal Das Gupta, and Kana Satkari used to meet at the house of Dr Sanat Kumar in Shyambazar, Kolkata that affected Nachiketa at a young age.
Nachiketar had the opportunity to see the then talented musicians of the Bengal. He played tabla with them from a very young age. Gradually tabla (and music) became Nachiketa’s first love.
At the age of 24, Nachiketa emerged as a promising music director and added a new dimension to the Bengali music scene. His achievement in music composition style is unique.
Kaniz Khadiza Tinni, an artiste of this generation who has the opportunity to sing songs composed by the famous music director Nachiketa Ghosh in the regular arrangements of RTV titled ‘Ei Raat Tomar Aamar’.
Recently, the work of recording the songs in Tinni’s voice titled ‘Nishi Raat Banka Chand Akashe’, ‘Emon Ekta Jhinuk,’ ‘Ei Mon Joshnai’, and ‘Ek Boishakh e Dekha Holo’ was completed at RTV’s own studio.
While talking in this regard, Tinni told this correspondent, “I like this arrangement of RTV very much because it is quite a neat and organised event. In this event, I have the opportunity to sing songs composed by legendary music director Nachiketa Ghosh, it is really nice for me. He studied medicine but kept himself involved with music all his life – this is a big thing. He left us in 1976, but the songs he composed are still alive among us. I have the utmost respect for him.”
In the meantime, she has sung in a show at the All Community Club of the capital. Recently, she also performed in a show of Kakrail in the capital. Tinni performed music at a function organised by the SSC 85th batch at Hasna Hena shooting house in Pubail on February 21.
