The transport strike in Mymensingh has been called off after all bus services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and inter-district routes remained suspended throughout Sunday. Bus operations resumed on all routes from 9:00 PM, following an emergency meeting convened to address public suffering.
The meeting, held at the Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, was attended by representatives of the District Motor Owners Association, transport workers’ unions, administration officials, and leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, following an initiative by the district administration.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Mufidul Alam confirmed the withdrawal of the strike, saying, “Considering the public suffering, the transport strike has been called off through discussions with all concerned stakeholders.”
He also announced the formation of a six-member committee tasked with identifying the ongoing issues and recommending solutions. Further action will be taken based on their findings.
District Superintendent of Police Kazi Akhtar ul Alam said the strike was lifted in view of the hardship faced by the public. Internal disputes will be resolved through future discussions, he added.
District Motor Owners Association President Md. Alamgir Mahmud Alam stated, “The workers’ strike has been called off through negotiations. From now on, all types of buses will operate on all routes as usual. We hope passengers will not face any further inconvenience.”
The strike stemmed from a dispute between the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCP) and the Anti-Discrimination Movement, which led to the suspension of bus services earlier in the day. The disruption caused significant suffering among commuters and regular passengers throughout the region.
