Myanmar’s junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, has expressed his intention to hold talks with Prof. Mohammed Yunus, an adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, during the BIMSTEC summit scheduled to take place in Bangkok on 3-4 April.
According to Reuters, citing three well-informed sources, Min Aung Hlaing is seeking a high-level bilateral meeting with Prof. Yunus during the summit.
The junta chief is subject to widespread Western sanctions and is barred from attending ASEAN summits due to Myanmar’s military government failing to implement an agreed peace plan with the bloc.
However, he will attend the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, which includes mostly South Asian countries, and the Myanmar delegation is seeking bilateral meetings with key regional leaders and officials.
These include potential meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prof.
Mohammed Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government.
“They have been reaching out, asking for meetings,” one of the sources said, referring to Myanmar officials. An Indian government source confirmed that Myanmar officials had made “overtures” to New Delhi, seeking a meeting between Min Aung Hlaing and Modi, but noted that India has yet to make a decision.
India’s foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment, and a spokesperson for Myanmar’s military government could not be immediately reached.
The discussions between Min Aung Hlaing and Prof. Yunus are considered critical in addressing the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
