Mustard cultivation has almost tripled in three years in Ishwardi. In the current season, a record amount of land has been cultivated with improved varieties of mustard.
Farmers are dreaming of more yields after seeing growing trees and flowers.
The agriculture department feels that farmers have become more interested in mustard cultivation last year due to good price of mustard in the local market.
The agriculture department said the government has adopted a three-year master plan to reduce import of edible oil.
For this reason, farmers are being encouraged by government incentives through the agriculture department. As a result, 1 thousand 705 hectares of mustard has been cultivated in the upazila this year.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Mita Sarkar said that mustard cultivation is increasing every year.
Mustard yield is available in less than three months. Mustard crop will be good this year too as the weather is favourable.
The amount of cultivated land is increasing every year as the profits are high. Last year mustard was cultivated on 1 thousand 195 hectares, but this year it has increased to 1 thousand 705 hectares. We are trying to double the cultivation of all kinds of crops.
Field level agricultural officers provide timely advice to farmers on agricultural matters.
However, as the cost and labor are less as well as the profit in mustard cultivation is high, the cultivation has increased.
In the season of 2021-22, mustard was cultivated in 680 hectares of land, but this time, in the season of 2023-24, it has been cultivated in 1 thousand 705 hectares of land.
Mustard cultivation has increased in 1 thousand 25 hectares of land in the last two seasons.
