The police on Monday evening have arrested ABM Mustafa Amin, the convener of “Nonviolent People’s Uprising of Bangladesh,” for luring people with promises of interest-free loans of Tk 1 lakh.
The organisation “Nonviolent People’s Uprising of Bangladesh” tried to gather over a hundred thousand people in Shahbagh, Dhaka, by promising interest-free loans of Tk 1 lakh per person, claiming the funds would come from laundered money brought back to the country. To qualify for this loan, individuals were required to register with a fee of Tk 1,000 and attend a rally in Shahbagh.
It has been reported that the organisation “Nonviolent People’s Uprising of Bangladesh” targeted poor, working-class individuals across the country, enticing them with the promise of returning laundered money from abroad and offering interest-free loans. In return, they collected a registration fee of Tk 1,000 from each participant.
On Sunday night people from across the country began arriving in Dhaka from 1am by bus, pick-up, and microbus. However, most of them were unaware of what was going to happen.
