Bangla Literature Muslim Renaissance Poet Mukul Chowdhury (Manjurul Karim Chowdhury) is no more. He breathed his last at 1.30 am on Tuesday (April 22) while undergoing treatment at the National Heart Foundation Sylhet (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 70 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Retired Islamic Foundation official Poet Mukul Chowdhury (Manjurul Karim Chowdhury) was born on August 22, 1958 in Khalopar village of Lalabazar Union of South Surma Upazila of Sylhet district. He is a hardworking poet and writer.
He has been writing relentlessly since the mid-seventies. He established himself in the Bengali literary scene as one of the most powerful poets of the eighties. In addition to poetry, he was powerful, neat, and intelligent in prose. He was fluent and distinctive in his essays, research, and children’s writing and editing.
He has published 28 books. Of these, six are poetry books, five are essays/research books, five are children’s books, and six are edited books. His first book of poetry, “Aspasth Bandar,” was published in 1991. His writing, “Aparthib Safarnama,” describes the uncertain world of the afterlife. His latest book of poetry, “Mrityuur Chitrakalp.”
In recognition of his work, Mukul Chowdhury was awarded the Book of the Year Achievement Award, BNSA, England (1996); Literary Award, Bangladesh Sahitya Sanskriti Sangsad, Dhaka (1997); Ragib Rabeya Literary Award, Sylhet (2006); Jalalabad Literary Award, Sylhet (2012).
Mukul Chowdhury’s body was brought to his beloved institution, the Central Muslim Sahitya Sangsad – Kemusas, today, Wednesday at 12:30 pm. Here, poets, writers, journalists and writers from all walks of life saw him off for the last time. After Zohr, mourners from all walks of life attended the funeral prayers of the deceased at the Naya Sarak Jame Mosque in the city. After the funeral prayers, he was buried in the Hazrat Manikpir (R:) cemetery.
The death of poet Mukul Chowdhury, the successful successor of Muslim Jagran poet Farrukh Ahmed, has cast a shadow of grief on the literary scene of Sylhet. Literary scholars of Sylhet are mourning his death. Along with this, his long-time colleague Islamic Foundation officials, are also mourning.
Various quarters have expressed their condolences on the death of poet Mukul Chowdhury. Sylhet Central Writers Forum President Md. Aminul Islam and General Secretary S A Shofiee have expressed deep shock and sorrow. In a condolence message, the leaders expressed their condolences to the bereaved family along with their prayers for the departed soul.
