Multipurpose Women Centre launched in Rohingya camp

UN Women has launched its 5th multipurpose Women Centre at Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar recently to support women’s empowerment.
The centre is built with the funds from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) for the construction, and contributions Japan and Canada for the operation and activities in the MPWC, said a media release yesterday.
The center is managed by BRAC, with supervision provided by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA).
UN Women in Cox’s Bazar empowers Rohingya women and girls through life-saving and supportive services and information, skills training and learning, said the UN agency.
Multipurpose Women Centres are places where women and girls can go to at any time to feel safer and empowered and have access to information, education, skills training, recreational activities, support and services.
UN Women has opened and is running five multipurpose women centres (MPWCs) in camps 3,4,4 extension, 5 and 18 in collaboration with Action Aid Bangladesh and BRAC, and three more are being established this year, including one in host community.
Kazi Mohammad Mozammel Hoque, additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, ASM Obaidullah, Camp-in-Charge for Camp 5, Shoko Ishikawa, UN Women Bangladesh Country Representative, Phedra Moon Morris, Head of Aid, Development Assistance, High Commission of Canada, Bangladesh, Paul O’Hagan, Humanitarian Advisor, British High Commission, Bangladesh, Baars Margo, Deputy Senior Coordinator, Inter-Sector Coordination Group, Cox’s Bazar, and Nousa Begum, Rohingya Women leader along with UN agency and INGO representatives from IOM, WFP, UNFPA and WHO among others were present.
