Sarjis Alam, chief organiser (north) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), on Saturday called for the complete political, economic, and cultural defeat of what he termed “Mujibism”, while addressing a large gathering at Jamaat-e-Islami’s grand rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.

“We may differ on many political matters, but when it comes to resisting Mujibism and authoritarianism, all forces behind the uprising must stand united,” said Sarjis, urging broad-based opposition unity.

Criticism of 1972 Constitution
In his strongly worded speech, Sarjis criticised the current constitution, describing it as a continuation of the political philosophy associated with the country’s founding leadership.

“As long as the 1972 constitution—rooted in Mujibist ideology—remains, there can be no truly pro-Bangladesh system,” he said.

Sarjis called for the formation of a new Constituent Assembly and the drafting of a fresh constitution aligned with what he described as the aspirations of the July uprising.

Warning Against Foreign Influence
He also voiced concern over renewed activities of pro-India groups across the country, warning against foreign influence in national affairs.

“No foreign power—India or otherwise—should be allowed to dominate Bangladesh’s sovereignty,” he said.

Demand for Accountability
Sarjis called on the interim government to function as a “post-uprising administration” rather than taking on a neutral or observer role.

“We don’t want a civil society role. The interim government must deliver justice. Sheikh Hasina must be tried, and the verdict must be carried out,” he declared.

He also stressed the importance of protecting the rights of women and minorities, ensuring judicial independence, and preventing the misuse of law enforcement agencies for political gains.

Message to the Opposition Alliance
Addressing the wider opposition coalition “Birodhi 24”, Sarjis called for principled unity.

“Unity does not mean silence in the face of wrongdoing. If anyone in our ranks engages in extortion or syndicate politics, we must speak out,” he said.

Calling for a value-based political culture, Sarjis concluded,

“Let our political rivalries remain within the bounds of respectful competition. We will meet again—either in the trenches of struggle or in the joy of victory.”
