Protesting MPO-listed teachers and staff have warned that if their discussions with the government end without a positive outcome, they will go ahead with their planned “March to Jamuna” programme.
The warning came amid discussion between the government and the representatives of the protesting MPO-listed teachers and staff at the Secretariat on Thursday.
Teachers and employees of private educational institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme have been demonstrating since Sunday, to press home several demands including a 20% increase in basic pay as house rent (with a minimum of Tk 3,000), Tk 1,500 as medical allowance for both teachers and staff, and an increase in the festival bonus for employees to 75%.
“We were supposed to begin the March to Jamuna after noon today,” said Saiful Islam, one of the demonstrators. “However, since our representatives are now in talks, we have postponed it. If the discussions do not bring a positive result, we will proceed with the March to Jamuna programme.”
